The final exam grade formula

Convert the final exam weight to a decimal before using the formula. For example, a final worth 30% of the course grade has a weight of 0.30.

Score needed = [target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)] ÷ final weight

A worked example

Suppose your current course grade is 82%, you want to finish with an 85%, and the final exam is worth 30%.

  1. Multiply the current grade by the completed course weight: 82 × 0.70 = 57.4.
  2. Subtract that result from the target grade: 85 − 57.4 = 27.6.
  3. Divide by the exam weight: 27.6 ÷ 0.30 = 92.

You need 92% on the final exam to finish the course with an 85%.

How to interpret the result

Below 0%

You have already secured the target grade, even if you earn no additional points on the final.

Between 0% and 100%

The target is mathematically possible. Use the result as your minimum exam goal.

Above 100%

The target is not possible from the final alone. Ask whether extra credit, dropped work, or another grading rule applies.

Exactly 100%

You must earn every available final-exam point to reach the target.

Check these details before you calculate

  • Use the current weighted grade. A simple average may be wrong when assignments, quizzes, and exams have different weights.
  • Confirm whether the final replaces another grade. If it does, the standard formula will not reflect that rule.
  • Keep percentages consistent. Enter 82 for 82%, not 0.82, when using a percentage-based calculator.
  • Allow for rounding. Your learning platform and instructor may round grades differently.

Frequently asked questions

Combine the parts only if they share one final-exam weight. If each part has a separate course weight, calculate them as separate graded items.

Yes, but a points method is simpler: subtract your earned points from the points required for your target, then compare the remainder with the points available on the final.
